Washington, D.C.의 National Mall 인근에 위치한 Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden은 건축가 Gordon Bunshaft에 의해 설계된 art museum으로 Smithsonian Institution의 일부를 차지합니다. 내부에는 Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Francis Bacon, Willem de Kooning, Ellsworth Kelly 등의 작품들이 전시되어있고, 외부는 sculpture garden으로 Auguste Rodin, Jeff Koons, Alexander Calder의 작품들이 있습니다

독일 태생의 Hans Hofmann(1880 ~ 1966)은 artist이자 art를 가르키는 선생님(art school in Munich, University of California – Berkeley, Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, Art Students League of New York, his own schools in New York – 후에 Massachusetts주 Provincetown로 이전)으로 예술사에 지대한 영향을 끼치고, 아울러 Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Jane Frank 등 수많은 제자를 양성한 추상표현 화가로 그의 작품의 출발점인 자연에 대한 경외감과 push/pull spatial 이론을 <Search for the Real>에 풀어놓은 저자입니다.
