Walt Whitman, When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer
When I heard the learn’d astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns
before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add,
divide, and measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he
lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

“…jingoism, racism, fear, religious fundamentalism: these are the ways of appealing to people if you’re trying to organize a mass base of support for policies that are really intended to crush them.”
“This is what you shall do: love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to everyone who asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown.”

….Robert Shetterly(1946 ~ )가 초상에 살며시 얹어 놓은, 우리보다 한결 뜻깊게 살아가는 진실들…

네덜란드 태생의 내가 좋아하는 Piet Mondrian(1872 ~ 1944)
그리고, 그의 그림에 울림을 더할 법한, 마치 그의 그림평을 하신듯한 Whitman(1819 ~ 1892)과 Emerson(1803 ~ 1882)의 말씀…
