22살때 부터 여행을 시작하여 세상 구석구석을 돌며 카메라에 담던 Henri Cartier-Bresson(1908–2004)은 1932년 발견한 Leica 35mm Rangefinder를 애용했는데, flash를 사용하지 않고, 암실이 아닌 viewfinder에서 사진을 완성한다는 믿음으로 그의 거의 모든 사진은 cropping이나 암실작업 없이 full-frame으로만 프린트되었습니다. 그래서 인화된 positive image 둘레에 black border가 존재합니다.(“Behind the Gare St. Lazare, 1932″는 예외)
늘 사람들의 일상 속으로 섞여들어가 “decisive moment”를 기다린 브레송…그래서 그의 사진에는 빛, 구도(상황), 시선, 느낌 등의 요소가 완벽히 어우러져 있습니다. 조급해하지 않고 셔터를 눌러 조리개를 여는 순간을, 렌즈라는 눈을 통해 그리고 마음의 눈을 통해 바라보며 기다리다 놓치지 않았던 그는 Bill Vandivert, Robert Capa, George Rodger, David “Chim” Seymour과 더불어 ‘Magnum Photos‘를 공동 설립하기도 했습니다.
